Roading / HighwaysPaekakariki Rockfall, SH1, Transit NZ (1999) Geotechnical
inspection by abseil of an area of 20 m high steep rock face affected
by a significant (500 m3) rockfall onto SH1 north of Wellington. The
sudden rockfall closed both lanes of the highway following a night of
heavy rain. An urgent cliff face inspection, suspended above busy SH1,
was carried out soon after the event to identify the extent of
appropriate scaling and to design cost effective geotechnical
remediation.
